Young Frankenstein

I was lucky enough to get invited to a work function that involved an open bar, dinner and a ticket to the broadway show, Young Frankenstein. I'd never seen the movie so I don't have much to compare it to, but I wasn't terribly impressed. Megan Mullaly was in it which was pretty entertaining. She's the actress who plays Karen on Will and Grace. I went in with low expectations and it did exceed those, but it wasn't on the high side of shows I've seen in New York, though I can count them on one hand. Here's the list in order of my preference:
Mary Poppins
Avenue Q
Phantom of the Opera
Young Frankenstein
The Lion King
Mary Poppins was pretty magical, Avenue Q was hilarious, the Phantom of the Opera was good, Young Frankenstein was entertaining enough. Now everyone seems to have absolutely loved the Lion King, but I didn't. Maybe it was just the performance I went to, but I felt like the actors were bored with what they were doing, there wasn't any oomph or passion to it. The costumes were of course great, but that's my opinion just in case you're coming for a show and want to know. I've also seen Blue Man Group which was great! though very different from a Broadway show. I highly recommend it if theater song and dance isn't your style.

Idiotarod 2008

From Idiotarod 2008
Dodge This
The Idiotarod was yesterday, and Scott and I got together a team consisting of Sara, Kevin, and a random message board find named Brian from Alaska. We got together Friday night to brainstorm and divide duties. Brian was given shopping cart duty, while Scott and I were in charge of a torso and sign. For any of you who've ever seen the movie "Dodgeball", that's what our team theme was based on. There's a scene where the coach for the underdog team, Patches O'Hoolahan famous for the line "if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball" is purported to bring them the "luck of the Irish" which unfortunately ends in him being smashed to death by a casino sign saying "Luck of the Irish." So our cart had a torso with a large sign on it's head. While we sported the ever so sexy sweatbands and sports wear.
Prep
We rendezvoused at our friend Ricardo's apartment. He was extra accomodating since we were painting and decorating in his living room. From there it was two miles to the starting point. Our cart was held up due to a massive subway power outage, so by the time we were ready to go we had to pretty much run the 2 miles to Fort Greene Park.

Starting Line
Once we got there we realized that this was a fake starting poing and that everyone else was in Chinatown. I don't know how we didn't get the text message, but an "official" gave us our paperwork and sent us on to checkpoint #1.
Checkpoint #1
There we caroused a bit with the other teams who showed up from the real starting point and got to see some of the creative genius other idiotaroders displayed. Team Danger Zone took the grand prize with a very authentic fighter jet that spewed steam and a flight crew who stripped down to play volleyball. You could always hear them coming as they played "Highway to the Danger Zone". My favorite cart this year were the Q-tips whose cart were some large ears.
From Idiotarod 2008
The Cooks had an oven cart with some sort of launching contraption/canon for their spaghetti. There was an Indiana Jones Cart with a large boulder for a cart, and the Golden Shower Girls were some lovely cross-dressed old ladies. From the look of some of the people at checkpoint #1 we'd missed a lot of sabatoge in the form of ketchup, mustard and egg throwing. The Quaker cart handed us some corn and we managed to avoid the Skunk cart's stink bomb. You were supposed to complete some activities at Checkpoint #1 but we just bribed one of the judges with a wrist band and managed to get out of the gate with directions to the next checkpoint.

Mini Checkpoint A
We were racing along with some other groups but Scott's genius which allows him to memorize maps at a glance, took us on a shortcut to mini checkpoint A. They doled out some spankings there, but I missed them the first time around so Scott took some more so I could get a picture. Apparently they hit REALLY hard and made him yelp in pain. I am sorry Scott, but it did make a nice picture, way to take one for the team.

Checkpoint #2
From there we were sent to Checkpoint #2 which was next to a river/canal here we were supposed to collect flags by winning competitions such as cart races, and tug o' war. We handily beat some cross dressing man-ladies and Kevin lunged for the finish in the crawling cart race. When I was handed one of our winning flags I nearly got tackled by some other teams trying to grab it away, but Scott came to my rescue. We also bribed the judge at this checkpoint with a tasty beverage and he let us continue on.

Finish Line!
We took it a little easy on the way to the finish line since we were pretty far ahead of the crowd and starting on our 7th mile. We went up and down some stairs over the freeway and then reached the home stretch.
From Idiotarod 2008
There were more cops at the finish line than there had been anywhere else. They mostly want to keep the peace. We started a dodgeball game in the street, but the cops didn't realize we had a block party permit so they tried to keep us on the sidewalk. Instead we took our A game down to a nearby park where we got our dodgeball on. I think I forgot to mention that along the way we were followed by a flatbed truck decorated as a wrestling ring where "pro wrestlers" welcomed all comers. We avoided that, but Scott did get hit by a mustard bomb in the rear.

Aftermath
All in all I was very proud of our team for coming together and having a quality, creative theme. We came in pretty far up at the top around 20th, got some extra points for bribing the judges (which is highly encouraged.) We had a great time and good exercise and didn't break ourselves, though everyone but Scott had a hard time standing up once we sat down at Dunkin Donuts for an after-race treat.
From Idiotarod 2008
The Google Pedometer tells me we went 7.0688 miles, well Kevin took 2 miles off because he met us at the start. It was pretty cold outside if you weren't moving, probably around 30 degrees. We walked to the subway, but it was still running funny, so we got out and caught a gypsy cab. In New York these are the cabs that aren't yellow, they're just car service cars who aren't technically supposed to pick you up randomly off the street, but it was really cold and we were tired, yellow cabs are scarce in brooklyn and the guy wanted to make a buck.
From Idiotarod 2008

We tried to find the after party, but somehow got ourselves into a Hasidic Jewish neighborhood where everyone is dressed the same with the men wearing "Streimel" which seemed to be the winter version of their hat. Even everyone's coat was the same, so it was pretty funny when we walked by with our costumes on. They were fairly tolerant, but I noticed a few people crossing the street to get away from our strangeness. We quickly figured out that we weren't in the right place and decided to head into the city to get some food and drinks.

Staff Photographer

So apparently I've become the staff photographer. I got a call yesterday afternoon from a co-worker who wanted me to bring my camera in so I could take a couple headshots for them today. I really liked this picture. I was joking with him trying to get him to give me a more relaxed smile. Of course it's not professsional enough, but it's my favorite of the bunch aside from a couple technical details, but I can always find things I'd like to improve on.
From Head Shots LD KS

I definitely admire my friends over at Largo Photography for their talent at making people comfortable in front of the camera. I think that's probably one of the hardest things once you've got the technical aspects down. Here's the one he actually used. They didn't turn out too bad considering it was indoors and I had 5 minutes and no outlets for the lights I tried to bring.
From Head Shots LD KS

I'm still trying to figure out a way to get more camera equipment. I especially need an off camera flash. The one that comes with the camera just doesn't cut it. I'm saving up the babysitting money, I just have to find time to babysit!

I have Big Brothers Big Sisters, Soccer and now Class on an upcoming Thursday. I forget if I mentioned that I am planning to get a certificate in Web Design at NYU, so I signed up for class. It's only six classes and I think it's a very beginning level certificate, but I figured I'd better just start at the beginning. I have self taught myself different parts of things so I'm probably a beginner at some things and more advanced at others. I tend to do things that way and then I get pretty far along before someone mentions something basic that I never even knew. Like Math, in school I was pretty good so they put me in advanced classes, and I learned all the hard math, but I never learned how to add/divide/multiply fractions. I can figure it out when I need to, but I learned my lesson. I am excited to take classes, I would be a career student if I could.

Trying to See People

I've been looking out for interesting people. It's tough to get them as they walk by, but here are a couple people who I managed to get shots of. The first is a guy who's been standing in front of the train station handing out some sort of flyer every morning. I always wonder about people who get to dress up in costume for their job. I don't know that it's any more effective than just having a plain person hand out flyers. People in New York have perfected the art of walking by without taking anything. This guy seems to somewhat enjoy his job though, he stands there sometimes with a Lady Liberty.

The second guy was in a Burger King in Jersey City. It was an odd Burger King experience with people working there who couldn't have cared less that Scott and I were standing there. I think we waited about 5 minutes at the front of the line for them to finish their conversation and take our order. Then they called a number and the person behind me got their food (#117) before the guy who was at least 3 people in front of us. When they called the number I pointedly looked at him, like hey it's this guy's turn for food. The BK staff finally looked over and asked his number (#113) and said "oh" and turned around and picked up his probably cold food and handed it to him. We were some of the only people in the place. The old men in between #113 and us were quirky as well. I think they must have walked over from the retirement home. Elderly people are just so quirky, I love to watch them go through the motions of habits they must have gained through hundreds of repetitions. I'm guessing Burger King was this guy's Saturday treat or something like that.

Number 47

I Googled myself today and found that this blog now shows up. It must have something to do with the fact that I linked to someone else's picture, because it never showed up before. Now it's the number 1 link. It used to just be junk that had no relation to me, so maybe Google is just getting better at figuring out people's every online move. Anyway, I also found this fun article. Apparently my good name is no longer good. Check out number 47 on Colorado's top 50 most wanted list. I'll change my name officially one of these days when I get all those forms filled out. I felt like this was too good not to pass along, since though I have been to Colorado, obviously I am a crime free individual. Evidenced by the fact that I won't even "borrow" a shopping cart from anywhere for the shopping cart race next Saturday. Well I'm off to play soccer outside in the snow.

New Project

I've been thinking lately that I need some sort of project or theme or tidbit that I can do as a regular blog post. I am considering doing some sort of interesting person of the day type thing. I see so many interesting, crazy, inventive, unique, people every day since I live in a city where everyone has their own culture and fashion. I feel like I should choose a random person to share with everyone. I'm not sure if I am brave enough to talk to the people I take pictures of, or if I'd just snap a quick photo and just wonder who they are. Maybe it will be a combination, or maybe it'll be an interesting person per week. I'm trying to think of a good acronyn. Daily Interesting Person (DIP) but DIP sounds like I'm making fun of these random people, and if I'm putting them out there for the world to see I don't want to be disparaging. Maybe Person of the Day (POD) or Person of the Week (POW). Any thoughts or ideas? I haven't had any comments lately.... if you stop by please say hi :)

Voila!

Apparently I look very French. I was in the elevator today and someone asked me if they could ask me a strange question. Of course I said yes since I love strange questions. It would have been kind of funny if I'd said no though, as if I were afraid of strange-ness. Anyway, the guy asked me if I was from France. "I'm not from France" I said, "but strangely enough I get that question a lot." Ok, well I don't get it alot, but I've been asked that at least two other times by random people. Once was when I worked at the movie theater in Farmington when I was in High School and this guy in a camouflage jacket asked if I was French, and when I said no he started to insist that I must be. I didn't really know how to argue with someone about me being French, so I just kind of smiled and nodded as I handed over his large Diet Dr. Pepper. Another time some guy at a party started telling me that they knew all about me though I'd never met him. So I asked him what he knew, and his opening statement was that I was French, when I said I wasn't, he was sure that I had French ancestry or something. Nothing against the French really, but I wasn't really sure how to take that comment in the elevator today either. I asked the guy why he thought so and he said it was my face and the fact that I'm thin and my haircut. But what do you say? Is that a compliment? Guy- "You're French looking" Me- "Thank you"... or "No I'm not" or....."That's nice."...."How lovely" You get the point. Maybe just "That's interesting" would be a better response. For the record my Dad's family ancestry is from Spain and my Mother's is German with probably something like a sixteenth Cherokee mixed in along with some possible Scottish blood. Basically I'm an American Mutt.

Sky's the limit

From Sky and Anna'...
It's been awhile, but I had a nasty cold and now I'm feeling much better. We were also busy getting ready to host Sky and Anna's Birthday party at our house. We had a fun night with Sing Star, a game for the PlayStation 2 where you get scored for how well you karaoke. It tells you if you hit the right note, which is fun even if you're not usually a karaoke fan.
From Sky and Anna'...
We also had a few other kinds of party games. I made them a rum cake and got them the nice trick candles, but unfortunately Sky knew the trick of how to blow them out just right so it didn't last as long as I'd hoped :) It was a bit of a sleepover party since we live out in Jersey and it's a bit of a trek for people to have to go back to the city at night. In the end we had 8 people in our little house. I was pretty impressed that only one person had to have a sleeping bag on the floor. Poor Scott had to get up early and go to work because they were having a neuroscience symposium, but by the time he got back we'd all finally woken up and he was able to join us for a brunch at IHOP.

It's been a fun long week with Scott's best man Lucas in town. We've been out doing all kinds of things. I will definitely miss vacation :)

Happy New Year!

From 2008_01_01
Scott and I have Lucas, Scott's best man visiting us for the week. After we returned from our travels we picked Lucas up on Sunday. Everyone went out for a NYC New Years. It was nice since usually we're travelling on New Years Eve. I think I'm usually on a plane or train or at home in bed. This year we went to Uncle Ming's. We got there and looked around and asked aloud where it was and the people standing near the door said "it's right here." It was one of those clubs that you have to know about to go into. They seem to have a lot of those in New York, I think they think it makes them seem exclusive. We had fun. I hope everyone else had a good one!
