3311 Reunion Tour

Back in my good ole college days the 4 girls in apartment 3311 were legendary for the fun and excitement that could always be found around them. Now that they've spread out over the globe from Joyanne in California and Sarah in Colorado to Valerie in Arizona and me New York it was time to take a break from the day jobs and hike on up to the final frontier.

Alaska was a fantastic place to vacation, made even better by the fact that Sarah's family took us in and fed and housed us like queens. Having a native Alaskan tour guide helped too. Sarah found us all sorts of Alaskan things, like moose, bald eagels, wild salmon and glaciers.

We hiked up mountains and walked and shopped and kayaked across the sea. I'm sure my lungs loved being away from the nasty New York air. One of my favorite wildlife sightings was watching the "combat fishermen" as they lined up along the bank of a river. If one person got a bite they'd have to yell "fish on!" so that everyone else would know not to get their lines tangled. We told the person at the tollbooth as we entered that we just wanted to come in and look at the fish, to which the park ranger gave us a raised eyebrow, shook her head and said 'ok, no charge if it's under half an hour.' With that time limit in mind, we wanted the fishermen to catch a big one more than some of them did. For awhile all was calm as the water rushed by tugging at one fisherman's beer bottles cooling in the water by his feet. Soon, you could see his pole dip sharply and he yelled, fish on! as he frantically grabbed to hold both his pole and keep the beers from floating away. Sadly his divided attention didn't pay off and that one got away. A few more lucky fish fought for and won their freedom as unlucky fishermen's poles bent nearly in two. Finally with just a few minutes left in our half hour, a nearby shout of 'fish on!' caught our attention. This man knew how to bring in a fish as he patiently reeled in and let the fish get tired as it swam closer and closer. The guy had a little boy with him who was just as excited as we were. He offered to help by suggesting that he could shoot the fish's eye out with a rubberband. Once the fish was on the ground the little boy offered to 'set a big rock on it'. The fisherman opted to pull out his knife and stab the fish in the brain, a pretty gruesome sight, but probably more humane than being rubberbanded or rocked to death. The fish was a big King Salmon, nearly as tall as the boy. Someday I think it would be fun to go fishing and cook one up straight out of the river. I think I might have to work out a little though, those things are huge! We certainly had our fill of seafood and just food in general. With the 5 Mapes women plus 3 more ladies, Sarah's dad was outnumbered, but at least he got some good meals out of the deal. I think we hiked and ate pretty much constantly. Since it didn't get dark until about midnight we didn't really stop or realize that it was getting late until then. It was certainly a relaxing vacation aside from the airport time where one plane's engine failed as we pulled away from the gate and another mad dash through the airport to a connecting flight left me facing a closed door just 5 minutes short of making it. Someday I may just have to go back.

New Lens

From May New Lens

So I saved up my babysitting money and finally decided to buy myself a beercan. Haha this beercan is probably more expensive than most since it's actually a lens. It's the nickname for the 70-200mm f4 Minolta lens that they made back in the day. The good thing about my Sony Alpha is that I can use all the old Minolta lenses. I can buy them used which makes it even better. Quite a few people recommended this lens as a solid choice and it's very solid. I don't know how I'll lug it around, but I love it. I can see my camera bag getting a little heavier as time goes on. My next goal is to buy a flash. I'm excited for this longer lens because I have my sister's graduation coming up, where I know I'll be out in the bleachers. So if I want to get a shot I'll have to zoom all the way in. I'm also super excited for my trip to Alaska with all my college roommates. I anticipate a few animal sightings where I will not want to get up close and personal. Bald Eagles, and Moose and Bears oh my! Anyway, i'm still learning my way around this lens, but I can't wait to get some more use out of it. I think I need to take a hike, literally. It's getting a little warmer out so now would be a good time to go before it gets humid and sticky. I thought this dandelion head was funny looking, since all the little puffy parts fell of before the seeds did.

My house is an old one with some of the original hardware on the doorknobs. it's pretty neat. The cat is one of the wild ones that lives and poops in the backyard. Scott and I are plotting a supersoaker campaign against them. The neighbor lady has called the pound, but they're too quick for the cat catcher.

Lovely Visit

It was better than the Tooth-Fairy or the Easter Bunny. Sarah Mapes and her boyfriend Corey visited us for four lovely days here in New York City. They drove all the way across the country just to see us. I think they deserve a gold star for doing that in just 2 days. Whew, I reported on Easter's activities. Monday Sarah and Corey tried to visit the Statue of Liberty but got stopped because of a pocket knife. I guess there's airport level security for the Statue. Instead they came up and got some passes to the Natural History Museum from me. Every guy is happy spending a day with the rocks and dinosaurs. Girls don't mind them either :)

After I got out of work we met up with Sarah's friend Sarah who she went to high school in Alaska with. Sarah Combs is going to Columbia for her masters, so of course Sarah Mapes had to have a chance to say hello. We grabbed some pizza and dessert at a bakery, a good NYC standby. Tuesday morning Sarah had a class to learn about grant writing and budgeting for work. Once she got done we headed down to China Town to grab some delicious food from Joe's Ginger. You can't beat the steamed pork soup buns for tastiness.

We also managed to fit in a trek across the Brooklyn bridge to some excellent pizza and some more Sing Star karaoke. We had a wonderful time and now we just need a way to get from Denver to New York quickly and easily. Anyone who has an extra jet plane lying around should send one my way.

This picture shows Sarah and Corey leaving NYC for the last time on this trip. The next picture is one that symbolizes my feelings. If I had been the one in the middle and hanging on to everyone. I didn't want to let them go! But I'm very glad they came.

Easter Parade

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter or a lovely Sunday if you don't celebrate that particular holiday. We've been having a wonderful time with Sarah and her boyfriend Corey in town. I will have to post about it all later because I'm too busy having fun for now. Just thought I'd share some pictures from the Easter Parade. It's not really a parade with floats, it's more of a thing where the street is blocked off and everyone wanders up and down it wearing hats, some crazy some more normal. It was fun to see. my favorite was the Peeps Statue of Liberty.

Count Down

Very soon Sarah and her man Corey will be coming to visit! I can't wait to see them. I've never met Corey, but I've heard good things :) It's been a little warmer lately which makes me so excited for spring. That is until all the pollen starts making me cry. Apparently in New York they plant male trees which have less root structure to tear up the sidewalks, but that also means a higher pollen count. Allergies in the city aren't very fun, but warmer weather is definitely welcome. I'm counting the days till flip flops and beach time.

Worst CrossWord Puzzle Ever

Hello. I like this blog thing. It makes me think of other people all day. I walk around trying to see or find something that is interesting enough to write about. It really makes me notice things, or at least appreciate them. When you live in New York City you start to take things for granted, or well you take things for granted anywhere, but the things you're taking for granted are kind of remarkable. Some bad, some better. For instance I take it for granted that every restaurant I eat in has roaches, if I see one scurry across the table in the middle of a bite I don't yell and demand a refund I just shrug and shift away. I do draw the line when I find a little friend at the bottom of my rice carton. Then I stop eating at that restaurant. Yes, that really happened once, and that restaurant is now closed down. Anyway, all this week I've been weaving in and out of police barriers and secret service type men. It's because the UN is in session and all the foreign dignitaries are in town. Since I work across the street from the St. Regis many men in suits with earpieces stare at me as I walk past, and big black vehicles with signs like "Malaysia PM" are parked along the street. I like to covertly observe all the security dudes as I walk past and see how many I can spot, then I kind of get self conscious and worry that they see me seeing them and they're going to take me down for casing the joint.
And now for the picture portion of the blog. I was thinking of all of you today when I couldn't finish my crossword puzzle on the train. I know some of you are excellent puzzlers (by the way I've met someone who makes them as a profession.) and so you will be just as outraged as I was/am when I got to 5 across and realized that the stupid free newspaper can't even get the crossword right, let alone report any news. Now there are two free newspapers that I can get in the morning. One is "Metro" and the other is "AM New York" they're the caliber of papers that regularly sell their front page as advertising. I used to choose one or the other based on which front page story I found more interesting. Then one day I was doing the crossword in Metro and there was a blatant misprint in the puzzle, so I became an ardent AMNYer. But today just leaves me completely at a loss. Not one of the ACROSS clues matched up to the puzzle. Sigh, but the ones I managed to fill in before I gave up the puzzle for lost made me think of you guys. Dali- Hannah just got back from Dali's house in France. Oman- plus its clue, Sarah and I are going to Oman and Yemen some time. Wok- Scott wants a Wok. Ok that's a stretch but anyway, I just wanted everyone to know I think about them all the time. And I took pictures of the puzzle which includes most everyone else who reads the blog because of photography connections. Hah! I win.

Denver Day 1.

A direct flight can be a wonderful thing. Except when some small child is pounding the back of your seat so insistently and so hard that the person sitting two seats over from you turns around and has to tell them to stop. I didn't say anything myself because of what preceded the kicking. When I got on the plane I heard the flight attendants whispering about where to move some people and how to shift them, so when two teen girls and their mom walked up and saw that one of their seats was gone, I knew there'd be trouble. The teen girls just said, hey no problem we'll just take the three across the aisle and we can all sit together. The mom said, no way. I am getting the seat that I selected. So she complained to the stewardess and the explanation she got was that the family of four doesn't speak English and they were individually spread throughout the plane so they wanted to put them together, especially since they had two small children. The woman wouldn't let it go though, she had an aisle seat, but it wasn't THAT aisle seat. She got to the point where she stood up in the aisle and argued about it. So they moved her away from her daughters to some other aisle seat. 2 hours into the flight the attendant comes up to the family with two small children and says that they have to move. The woman hasn't stopped complaining about how she needs her seat back. So the poor family gets up and moves, and I never saw the complaining lady come up to sit in her rightful seat. It did end the kicking though :) I arrived in Denver and Sarah came to pick me up so we could grab an early lunch at a tasty Mexican food place. Thankfully Denver has green chile, a food you can't get on the east coast. There were even green chile stands all over the place with fresh New Mexico green chile being roasted. Next to the green chile stand were some sunglasessssez stands. I think they never quite spelled it like that, but they did spell it at least three different ways. That night Sarah and I went out for Margaritas and sat out on the patio just people watching. It was pretty entertaining when some person reached toward the top of the fountain and suddenly was knocking off an entire level with the top bowl falling over and pouring into the lap of whoever was sitting next to the fountain. We called it an early night since the next day we had plans to get up and go hiking.
