I'm getting behind on blog posts. So I'll play catch up with this one. Last Sunday I took my sister Lauren to go see Wicked. I have some connections in the city, which is a good thing otherwise we'd never have managed to get tickets. It was a good show and we had some great orchestra seats. I still like the book better and the ending to the broadway version was not so great, but I guess broadway is a little like Disney, they just can't help but give you a happy sappy ending. The guy next to me too a hundred dollar nap, which seems a little ridiculous. I guess some people just have money to throw away. At the end of the show they asked for donations for the broadway charity drive that they do every year benefitting something like kids with aids or cancer. The lady behind us made some snarky remark about having to listen to such a thing.
On Wednesday a co-worker of mine offered me a ticket to a show at Carnagie Hall. It's funny what you get used to being around. When I really think about it, casually going to Carnagie Hall isn't something most people can do. It was an interesting show with three guys who were jazz musicians but tended to do more of a musical noise routine. The vocalist just played around making different noises and at one point the show devolved into them throwing drumsticks around the stage.
Friday we had a softball game where I actually managed to make it home and caught a pop fly. I was proud. The quote of the day came from a new girl on the team who hit the ball and ran to first but didn't make it before the ball did so she was out. She turned around and said "All that running for nothing?" Haha, I guess the game is kind of new to her. We were pretty far behind, but in the last inning we managed to make a good rally and ended up only losing by three runs. I think the score was 18-21.

I was lucky enough to get invited to a work function that involved an open bar, dinner and a ticket to the broadway show, Young Frankenstein. I'd never seen the movie so I don't have much to compare it to, but I wasn't terribly impressed. Megan Mullaly was in it which was pretty entertaining. She's the actress who plays Karen on Will and Grace. I went in with low expectations and it did exceed those, but it wasn't on the high side of shows I've seen in New York, though I can count them on one hand. Here's the list in order of my preference:
Mary Poppins
Avenue Q
Phantom of the Opera
Young Frankenstein
The Lion King
Mary Poppins was pretty magical, Avenue Q was hilarious, the Phantom of the Opera was good, Young Frankenstein was entertaining enough. Now everyone seems to have absolutely loved the Lion King, but I didn't. Maybe it was just the performance I went to, but I felt like the actors were bored with what they were doing, there wasn't any oomph or passion to it. The costumes were of course great, but that's my opinion just in case you're coming for a show and want to know. I've also seen Blue Man Group which was great! though very different from a Broadway show. I highly recommend it if theater song and dance isn't your style.
It's been a busy week with Volleyball, soccer and celebrations. Friday I went out with a friend from work for his birthday and Saturday night Scott and I went out to celebrate that someone had graduated with his PHD. I can't wait until we're celebrating for Scott. That's probably another 3 years off. We woke up to a little snow this morning, very pretty. I think it's supposed to rain tonight, so hopefully it will all go away for my walk to work on Monday.
I think AZ's rain is our snow, so thanks for sending the weather our way! Anna got us tickets to Walmartopia tonight so we get to go with them to a show! I have no idea if it'll be any good, but at least it'll be entertaining.
For Big Brothers Big Sisters we're going to go do Karaoke in a couple weeks and I'm trying to think of a good song to humiliate myself trying to sing in front of a bunch of city teens. So far all the rap songs I've found reference things that I'm not supposed to be encouraging, but I'm still looking since I think I have a better chance of rapping than singing in key :) Any suggestions are welcome.
