Sisterly Love

My sister is in town, the middle one. She reports that on her day of mall trolling in Jersey City she was alarmed to learn that people don't wear shoes that fit around here. Maybe it's the economy. I don't know if we'll have a chance for any good adventures while she's here since most of her time will be spent in Pennsylvania with her boyfriend at a wedding (not hers).

Here's a picture from an art event we went to this summer. They pinned on your supposed death typed onto a piece of lace. I was devastated about being drowned as you can see.

Week in Review

I'm getting behind on blog posts. So I'll play catch up with this one. Last Sunday I took my sister Lauren to go see Wicked. I have some connections in the city, which is a good thing otherwise we'd never have managed to get tickets. It was a good show and we had some great orchestra seats. I still like the book better and the ending to the broadway version was not so great, but I guess broadway is a little like Disney, they just can't help but give you a happy sappy ending. The guy next to me too a hundred dollar nap, which seems a little ridiculous. I guess some people just have money to throw away. At the end of the show they asked for donations for the broadway charity drive that they do every year benefitting something like kids with aids or cancer. The lady behind us made some snarky remark about having to listen to such a thing.

On Wednesday a co-worker of mine offered me a ticket to a show at Carnagie Hall. It's funny what you get used to being around. When I really think about it, casually going to Carnagie Hall isn't something most people can do. It was an interesting show with three guys who were jazz musicians but tended to do more of a musical noise routine. The vocalist just played around making different noises and at one point the show devolved into them throwing drumsticks around the stage.

Friday we had a softball game where I actually managed to make it home and caught a pop fly. I was proud. The quote of the day came from a new girl on the team who hit the ball and ran to first but didn't make it before the ball did so she was out. She turned around and said "All that running for nothing?" Haha, I guess the game is kind of new to her. We were pretty far behind, but in the last inning we managed to make a good rally and ended up only losing by three runs. I think the score was 18-21.

Here's a sneak peek at pictures from this weekend. I'll blog about them and post more later.

Last Saturday

I spent last Saturday hanging out with my little sister Lauren. She's not soo little anymore since she's almost 21 and may have a tiny height advantage, but anyway... I decided it would be fun to go check out the Brooklyn Botanical Garden since it is free on Saturdays and some of the cherry blossoms and magnolia trees were blooming. She brought along some of the people she is traveling with for Model United Nations and we all enjoyed being out in the sun and seeing all the nice foliage and grass for a change. A change for them since living in New Mexico means that large grassy areas are usually golf courses and a change for me since the New York City lifestyle allows for more concrete than grass. Though I did notice that the backyard could use some mowing.... Scott.

After the garden we were off to find a brunch place. We tried to do unlimited Mimosas, but unfortunately a good portion of the group wasn't quite of legal age just yet. So we just enjoyed the food. After that we headed up to Central Park where we encountered a couple superheros. I think they may have been at New York ComiCon and wandered off the trail.

We split up after that and Lauren and I decided to go shopping for a little while and Anna met up with us to help. There are definitely some good deals around town if you have the patience. I usually don't. I'm a very strange girl, I don't like chocolate or shopping all that much. Even though I don't like chocolate I know that other people do, so I decided to lead us to Max Brenner. A place reminiscent of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory with pipes of chocolate and a comprehensive desert menu. We ordered the chocolate mess, but I wish we had tried one of the options that came with fresh strawberries and cream. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to visit again sometime.

We decided that for our evening entertainment that Anna, Scott and I would introduce Lauren to Sing Star, the karaoke PlayStation game. That game is very addictive even if you're not usually a big singer. We played until about 3 am and I feel sorry for my neighbor, but once you get into it you just can't put the microphone down. Scott always beats us at the girly songs.

Last post of 2007

The last weeks of 2007 have been busy ones. Scott and I flew to Des Moines Iowa the weekend before Christmas. We had good timing since they had a storm the day before we flew in. The runways were snow covered and the wind made the snow blow along the ground, either the snowflakes were very small or it was just pieces of snowflakes being blown along like dust along the ground. I tried to get a picture but it wasn't really possible.

Scott's mom picked us up and we decided that we'd need to stop at Walgreens since Scott's bag hadn't arrived with us despite the 3 hour layover and the fact that my bag made it there. We made the hour long drive to Toledo where Scott's Mom, Susan tried to drop off some stuff in a storage unit. Of course we realized once we pulled into the driveway that it was a solid sheet of ice and that we'd have to do some major manuvering to get back out. Scott and I got out and pushed and we managed to skate our way back out again. Later that night Scott's bag got delivered too, so everything worked out.

We opened presents at Scott's grandparent's house on Christmas eve since we'd have to head back to Des Moines on Christmas day to catch our flight to New Mexico. We had a nice time playing cards with his family and even managed to go for a walk out into the cornfields for a mini photo shoot.

We got to New Mexico with no problem and my Aunt Luella and Uncle Diego picked us up for the 3 hour drive to Farmington. We got to have another Christmas dinner and presents there.

It snowed enough to make the roads slick, but as ususal for NM snow it melted before noon.

My sister Erin will be graduating soon, so she wanted to try taking some senior pictures, but it was so freezing and windy that we didn't get much done. When the snow is outracing the car then you know it's windy. Hair blowing straight up in the air doesn't make for the most attractive pictures.
From Erin's Senior...
It was a short visit, but we also got to have some coffee with Chris and Tammie Billey of Largo Photography. We also got to meet their son Treston who is even more adorable in person than in pictures :) Scott got a mentos and coke rocket launcher in his stocking, but we didn't want to carry the soda so we launched it before we left.

Afterwards we headed back to Albuquerque so we could catch our flight the next day back to New York. I took some pictures of the NM scenery along the way.

Again we got lucky since we flew through Chicago and they'd just had a very large snowstorm the day before. We got home all in one piece and with lots of extra goodies. It was very nice to see everyone. It may have been a whirlwind trip, but it was definitely worth it!

Appreciating the Small Things

My sister Lauren got a job. It's at Hobby Lobby part time. If you've ever been to Hobby Lobby you know it's a crafter's dream. Similar to a Michael's store only twice as good. I hope she gets good discounts so I can craft more things.
Hmm I'm trying to think about things that I did today that would be interesting. Not too much happened. The only thing that came to mind when I was thinking about my day was the coordination of lunch plans. That's one thing I like about the group I work with, there are about 8 of us who will typically ask each other what we're doing for lunch, and depending on who's busy and who wants what we'll order something together or just grab food and go eat in one of the tables in our bay area overlooking the public atrium. So we sit and chat and people watch. It's a nice little lunchtime thing, that when I start thinking about it, I realize that probably most places you work things like that don't happen. Everyone just goes their own way.
Another happy thing, Scott got home early from work so he was here when I got home. It's nice not to come home to an empty house every once in awhile.
That's three things. I've tried to adopt the habit of naming three good things that happened to me every day before I go to bed. Sometimes Scott and I will share ours with eachother. It really is a good habit to get into. It helps you appreciate the small things and big things in life. It can also help when you think you've had a bad day, because there always seems to be at least three good things, no matter how miniscule.

Trivia about today: It is National X-Ray Day! Happy X-Rays everyone.
